Design Technology

Design Technology is an exciting and popular subject at Moon Hall, Reigate.

Key Stage 3

Design Technology is taught in all year groups up to Key Stage 3 and AQA Design & Technology GCSE is offered as an option at Key Stage 4. The workshop is equipped with a number of machines including band and scroll saws, pillar drills and sanding machines.  Pupils also have access to CAD/CAM in the form of a laser cutter, CNC router and 3D printer. The pupils use a range of materials, including modelling materials, timber, acrylic, and some metals.

The pupils are given a practical understanding of these materials through the production of high quality, original and creative solutions to the projects set by the Department. They are taught a variety of skills including the correct and safe use of tools and machinery ensuring that they have a comprehensive understanding of Health and Safety issues.


Key Stage 4

We follow the AQA Design and Technology – 8552 GCSE syllabus.  This qualification is linear. Linear means that students will sit their exam and submit their non-exam assessment (NEA / coursework) at the end of the course.

How is it assessed?

  • Written exam (50% of GCSE) - 2 hours; 100 marks
  • Non-exam assessment (NEA - 50% of GCSE) - 35 hours approx; 100 marks
